Another Busy Week

Well it was another busy, fun week.
Monday we bowled, and I am starting to get the hang of this game.  I actually got 5 spares/strikes in one game.  And I beat Alf in two of the three games we played - but he had a good third game so his total score was more then mine.

Tuesday I golfed with the women from Dell Lake and did not do well.  Wednesday Alf and I golfed with the couples group and I had a great game. (I actually beat Alf, but don't tell him) I do not understand why I can golf poorly one day and well the next, but it is things like this that keep me playing the game.   Thursday was a stay at home day, played shuffleboard in the morning.

Friday found us on a trip to Circle B Bar Preserve for a tram tour.  The tour was set up by the RV Park where our fifth wheel is and we went with Dave and Janie, our neigbours at that park and with Brian and Lynn, (Alf's sister and brother-in-law) who are now staying in our fifth wheel.  It was a great tour and we learned a lot about Florida wildlife.  They gave us really great binoculars to use for the duration of our trip and our tour guide regaled us with all kinds of wonderful stories and facts.

We saw this bald eagle nest, apparently the nest is the size of a king-size bed.

The plant growing on the side of this tree is called the resurrection fern, it looks dead, but comes to life when the wet season starts.

These birds are called the roseata spoonbills.  They have huge wide bills that they scoop up their food with, they like shrimp and apparently the more they eat the pinker they get.
Obviously the dark pink bird is a good eater.

Saturday morning we found some wildlife entertainment just outside our door.  A pair of  sandhill cranes were in the back yard of the house next door, walking right up to their bird feeder and helping themselves.

They then proceeded to call their friends over and they all helped themselves.  Then they wandered over to our place, one was pretty brave and walked right up to our back porch to check our our solar light.  I think he thought it was a bird feeder as well.

They are a pretty bird, and quite regal in their bearing.
You would not want to start feeding these guys though, I think they would become quite aggressive.

Actually it was a rather busy week for wildlife sightings on our lake.
Earlier in the week we had two rather amorous ducks in our back yard, after a rather elaborate mating dance, they mated right there outside our window.  Oh how I blushed.

Then we had the synchronized anhinga swim team.  It started with just one bird, which is normal, but soon there were about nine of them.  They all swam for a while, and then  they all dived underwater and came up together some 20 feet further up the lake.  They swam all around the lake.  Then I decided to get my camera, and then they changed the choregraphy.  They swam one way, then the other, then one by one, they all flew off except for the one lone bird.  The video is on my facebook page.

We went to  Lake Wales for the Mardi Gras Parade.  This is quite the wild time.

They were predicting  32,000 people and it was crowded.

They close down all the streets in downtown Lake Wales and people line the streets.  People take their lawn chairs and set them up early in the day and then come back later to watch the parade.

It wasn't a typical parade.  No marching bands, and the floats were all a little crazy, some with music, some not, but everybody was having a great time.  People on each float throw out beads to the crowds.  Gotta keep your eyes on them all the time or you will get a strand of beads in the face.  They must have gone through truck loads of them.  All in all we collected quite a number of strands.

Now here is an interesting group of folks - do you know what they are enacting?

While in Lake Wales we saw this tree.  It looked dead but there were beautiful yellow blossoms and soft fuzzy seed pods, and these air plants all on the same tree.

Indeed, everywhere we turn there is something new to see.  God's world is full of amazing wonders.
